Designers Aaron R Thomas and Anne Ewen (A.R.T.a.e.) are -first of all- Artists. Anne and Aaron met at a figure drawing session in downtown LA and began collaborating together on design projects and art commissions almost immediately. Their capacity for unbridled creativity informs their design work. The symbiosis of their differences and strengths are a creation powerhouse. Delving into ARTae is to get a feel for the powerful undercurrent of ARTdesign: the fanciful, the longing, the silly, the ineffable.

ARTae is currently moving into a new studio space.

The Chandelirium:

The newest creation to light up ARTae Gallery! Aaron R Thomas and Anne Ewen (ARTae) have revisited the process they invented to sculpt their 1500 pound masterpiece, Nest, to create the Chandelirium: A Modern Minimal Delirious Fantasy of a Chandelier.

Aaron R Thomas and Anne Ewen hand-weave and loop strips of re-claimed acrylic to create each unique sculpted pendulum light. The self-supporting structure of interwoven clear and white acrylic strips creates a nest of ribbons around a 7" globe in a polished nickel fixture.

A limited number (measuring approximately 30" high and 20" wide) will be sold “ready-to-carry” from their online boutique, ARTc. ARTae can be commissioned to create Chandeliriums of other dimensions, shapes and colors.

DiGi has the best office in town!

Okay, it’s not really in town but DiGi’s new HQ (D’House) at Subang Hi-Tech Industrial Park has got to be the coolest telco HQ in Malaysia.

The media had a chance to check the new HQ out when DiGi threw a party on Tuesday, 22 August.

Everyone must have been impressed with the abstract glass architecture, open spaces and the even more open office setup. I also gathered that the IT people at DiGi have set up a state of the art IT system that allows anyone to work from anywhere in the building as if they are at their own desk. I didn’t see any cubicles, by the way. And their meeting rooms are to die for!...Imagine working in an environment like that!

The Hip Staff at Digi commissioned Aaron R Thomas to create 51 unique pieces of furniture to show off in their Main Entry.
A Collaboration between Aaron R Thomas and Anne Ewen, Each barstool, Lounger and specially designed Mac Powerbook Stations was hand painted.

For the Grand Opening, we made a "cake". Aaron R Thomas and Anne Ewen collaborated on a large painting on plexiglas which was then cut into smaller pieces and sold in sections. Our hope was that friends, couples, whoever would buy adjacent pieces and keep them as special momentos, like those little friendship necklaces with the charms that divide up into parts. Most of the pieces that were sold, however, were bought by crazed art lovers who bought 9 at a time to feed their own personal appetite.
These 9 were bought by a collector to hand out in the way that we'd hoped: Some staying with friends in California, Some going to the East Coast and to the South, Even one to be packed away and brought with a soldier returning to Iraq.

We had our sneak peak last night at the Old Vine Cafe and all of our work setting up the cafe as well as the upstairs patio were rivaled with the beautiful spread of delectable food and tray passed hors d'eouvres put on by Brandon and Mark from the Old Vine. We are now looking ahead to our Grand Opening Celebration on this upcoming Saturday which will feature even more art, acrylic furniture, and sculpture than we were able to show at the sneak peak.

We had a ball. I don't know what Aaron and Anne were expecting when I showed up, but when I saw all the paintings and plexiglas sculptures I thought, 'PROPS!' Aaron hatching inspiration beneath his Firefly Lamp. In a bed of plastic... What I found so much fun with this shoot was that Aaron and Anne's art inspired me to do more innovative things to show it (and them) off. Anne in front of one of her paintings. Or is it a painting? Double trouble Dynamic duo...hehehe."

It's official.
We've taken over the giant warehouse next our Designing &
Manufacturing Space to make space for our art studios and gallery.
We are glowing with contentment.

Heretofore when we've talked about painted furniture in relation to our work, we've been referring to Aaron's commissioned works of painted artwork created ON his acrylic / lucite chairs, tables or lamps.

This time we'd like to present a recent painting by Anne Ewen of Aaron's Pondering Chair as it sits in the new a.r.t.a.e. gallery.

I guess we're having what I've noticed people like to call a "soft opening"... currently...?
